BREAK THE CYCLE OF SUFFERING CAUSED BY ECZEMA
A top celebrity doctor has warned that the common ‘skin sensitisers’ contained in modern skin care products can worsen eczema and even initiate the onset of dermatitis.
Eczema affects around 10-20 per cent of school children and 3-5 per cent of adults and cases have more than doubled over the last 30 years.
Environmental factors have certainly been one of the main causes for this rise along with an increasing exposure to allergens. However ‘skin sensitisers’ within skin care products are another cause for the onset and worsening of eczema.
GP and resident doctor on ITV’s ‘This Morning’, Dr Chris Steele said: “For those who may not be aware ‘skin sensitisers’ tend to be chemicals which can cause an allergic skin reaction. For some, this reaction happens straight away, for others it may take weeks, months or even years. I’ve long believed that it is these skin sensitisers which have caused my patients ongoing problems.

“It may seem strange that creams contain chemicals which can actually irritate the skin. Whilst these common chemical skin sensitisers often have no positive effect on the moisturising ability of creams, they are included in the formulations primarily as part of the preservative system. They help make sure the creams remain stable and don’t go off before they are used.”
An effective moisturizing regime can have a hugely positive effect for sufferers but many cannot use creams long-term and are forced to constantly change the brand they use as their skin develops adverse reactions to sensitisers. This cycle never allows the skin to heal and can be incredibly frustrating for sufferers.
DermaSalve skincare products are the first ever moisturising cream range with no common skin sensititsers and are specially formulated to care for dry and sensitive skin.
The range was developed by practising GP, Dr Mark Randle after he discovered his youngest son’s skin was beginning to react to some baby care products. He also found that a number of patients with dry skin problems were reporting lack of progress and even reactions to creams that were prescribed.
Dr Randle said: “I did some research into the pharmaceutical and cosmetic creams that were available in the UK and Europe and found that all of them contained ingredients which had the potential to cause inflamed skin reactions.
“I then began to develop a range which was skin sensitiser free, using ingredients such as wheatgerm, jojoba, palm oils, grapeseed extract and aloe vera to optimise moisturisation and Vitamins C and E to improve skin condition.”
Dr Chris Steele continues: “It’s funny how things often turn full circle, but I now have two young grand daughters who suffer from eczema. Both now use DermaSalve and have stuck with it with positive results. I’ve recommended Dr Randle’s creams to many people now, all with tremendous results.
“I wrote to Mark recently to tell him about the impact of his work on my family. He told me he’s had lot’s of positive feedback from eczema sufferers but is still dismayed at how little is communicated about skin sensitisers to those who need to know. To my knowledge DermaSalve is still the only range of creams out there containing none of the common skin sensitisers. The challenge is out there for everyone else!”

DERMASALVE CREAM ALLEVIATES SKIN SUFFERING FOR JACK
Sara Rowe’s five year old son, Jack has suffered with severe eczema since he was eight months old. At times, his condition has been so bad that Jack’s body needed to be wet-wrapped from head to toe in bandages. Sara has tried many different creams and treatments and their family doctor had prescribed courses of antibiotics and sedatives to help Jack sleep in ease.
“I’ve often had to bandage Jack’s hands so that he won’t scratch his skin and women have come up to me in the supermarket and asked how he had managed to burn both his hands, which was upsetting,” says Sara. “People don’t realise how hard it can be to stop a child from scratching when they don’t understand why you’re chastising them because they’re too young.”
“If Jack doesn’t get a good night’s sleep then his skin tends to flare up. Bathing is also very hard for Jack psychologically because his skin was so bad when he was younger that it would sting terribly. Now that he’s older I can’t just try and distract him by playing and he’s old enough to lash out when I try and place him in the bath.”
Jack’s schoolwork has also suffered as he understandably finds it hard to concentrate when his skin is itching fiercely. Sara had tried over 16 different products and ranges to help alleviate Jack’s skin condition but had seen no significant improvement. Until, that is, she tried the DermaSalve skincare range.
Sara continues: “I was given some DermaSalve samples by Jack’s dermatological nurse and I was surprised at how quickly they worked. In less than a week his face improved dramatically. Now that his skin is better, Jack is like a different child. He has been able to wear normal pyjamas for the first time and is sleeping better, he is concentrating more with his school work and is generally a much happier child.”

DERMASALVE OFFERS RE-ASSURANCE FOR MUMS

We all have choices when it comes to the skincare and cosmetic products we put on our skin and the issue of chemical ingredients is more important to some than others.
But when it comes to our children, many parents are less willing to take risks. This generation of children is more exposed to chemicals than any other in history; and infant skin is far more vulnerable to irritants than adult skin.
Skin sensitisers are either chemicals or proteins in natural ingredients, and can cause skin reactions and irritation. While protein allergies often develop quickly, chemical allergies usually build up over time and cause the greatest concern for Mums.
Infant skin is thinner than adult skin and the barrier function of their skin is limited compared to adults. While many babies suffer from dry and sensitive skin in their early years, mothers need to be aware of the chemicals contained within the baby moisturisers they pick up on the high street.
The cumulative effect of the chemicals contained within such products can create chemical allergies later in life and result in painful skin irritation.
Parabens and lanolin can cause allergic reactions, and concerns have been expressed regarding a potential link with parabens to cancer. Alcohol, meanwhile can dry and irritate the skin.
DermaSalve skincare products are the first ever moisturising cream range containing no skin sensitisers and are specially formulated to care for baby’s dry and sensitive skin. The range was developed by practising GP, Dr Mark Randle after he discovered his youngest son’s skin was beginning to react adversely to some baby care products.
Dr Mark Randle said: “These skin sensitisers are listed in an EU Cosmetics Directive as potential irritants and yet all the widely available skincare products still contain these ingredients.”
“What I wanted to create with the DermaSalve range was a cream that was as compositionally ‘pure’ as possible and we have a Baby & Infant Cream designed specifically for Mums to use on their children.” |
